Week of October 21-25!

Hello EDK Families!

We are nearing the end of our unit: Fall and Our Changing Environment! We started the week by designing and building a structure with various materials that could support a mini pumpkin! The students worked hard with partners and I was very impressed by their teamwork and creations! We created a KWL (Know, Wonder, Learn) chart about pumpkins and explored the parts of a pumpkin, the life cycle, and why we carve pumpkins.

We will continue our Fall and Pumpkin fun next week!

Please check your child's blue EDK folder for more information about Halloween at Jefferson! Also, please send in headphones for your child to use and keep at EDK during iPad time!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Week of October 15 - 18!

This week the kindergartners observed an apple dissection to explore the different parts of an apple, investigated the life cycle of an apple, and conducted an apple taste test.  We had one busy week!  Students shared ideas about what their favorite apple product was, identified the different parts of an apple and discussed what their favorite apple was during the taste test.
We continue to make observations about the changes occurring this season, especially the autumn moon and how early night seems to come.

We are excited to discover all pumpkins have to offer next week!

Have a great weekend!

We love iPad learning at EDK!

Week of October 7-11!

This week we continued to be scientists and track our daily fall weather and observe the changes in the environment!

The students learned about the various parts of leaves and trees. We also went on a class Nature Walk and a Leaf Hunt to collect leaves around Jefferson School! They even discovered how to rub a leaf with a crayon!

NEXT WEEK:
We will explore the parts of an apple by dissecting the fruit to see what is inside! We will even conduct an apple tasting!

Please send your child's permission slip signed to participate in the Apple tasting on Friday, October 18.

REMINDER! No School on Monday, October 14!

Week of September 30 - October 4!

This week students discovered that we are all scientists.  Like scientists, we use our five senses to make predictions and observations.  As kindergarten scientists, we will record our observations by writing, drawing with labels or drawing.

Students explored our new unit: Fall and Our Changing Environment.  Students had an opportunity to go out to the Jefferson courtyard to use our sense of sight and sound to observe a tree and record our observations.

The kindergartners also tracked our weather this week, and made daily predictions of what our
weather would be like the following day.  Students observed that in early fall, there was no pattern to our weekly weather.  One of our jobs in class is that of a Meteorologist, which students understand are scientists that track and observe weather to help us prepare for weather conditions.

We also completed a science experiment with the other EDK class and observed what happened to ice when left in the sun and in the shade.

Next week we will explore the parts of trees and leaves and continue to observe changes we see occurring in our environment.
