Week of January 6 - 10!

Welcome Back to EDK!

Happy New Year!
We started the week by reviewing classroom rules, the Jefferson 3Bs, and taking a walk to the courtyard! We completed another page in our Tree Journal and drew our winter tree! The students have been excited to observe how the tree changes throughout the seasons!

We then jumped back into our Force and Motion unit through exploring simple machines! The students learned that there are six types of simple machines and that each one helps to make work easier! The students designed and created catapults, ramps, wheel and axels, and pulleys throughout our lessons and center time each day.

Next week we will wrap up our Force and Motion unit and discuss Magnets.

Please don't forget to fill out the Around the World 2020 survey that was emailed on Tuesday! This will help us when teaching our Cultures Around the World unit starting Tuesday, January 21!

Have a great weekend!

Week of December 16 - 20!

Hello!
It is hard to believe we are already beginning Winter Break!
We had a busy and exciting holiday week in EDK!
We celebrated Grinch Day and brainstormed ways we would help the Grinch to grin! The students also created Grinch masks! We had a relaxing read aloud of The Polar Express while wearing our cozy pajamas and making a hot chocolate craft. We enjoyed visiting Emerson Middle School where Mr. Bachmann and the Emerson band performed a special holiday concert! We learned all about Hanukkah and watercolor painted a Menorah. The students ended the week with an experiment. We investigated which of Santa's cookies (chocolate chip, gingerbread, or an Oreo) would dissolve in a glass of milk the quickest and made our own hypothesis. We even had a visit from Santa!

Have a relaxing Winter Break! I look forward to seeing the students in 2020!

Hello Families!

This week we continued exploring Force and Motion! We learned about rolling objects and the students worked together and problem solved in teams to create ramps using various building materials from the classroom (Magna-Tiles, wood blocks, tracks, legos, etc.). The class hypothesized what types of ramps would increase the speed of a marble rolling. We also explored gravity and completed a gravity experiment where we tested the speed of three objects with different properties (size, color, shape).

We will continue our Force and Motion Unit after the holiday break!
Have a great weekend!
REMINDER - Monday, 12/16, is Grinch Day!

Week of December 2nd - 6th!

Hello Families!

It is hard to believe that we are already into December! This week we began our unit on Force and Motion. We started the week by exploring different things that move and classifying them as living things or nonliving things. We also worked on force and push/pull. The students even created push and pull artwork by practicing pushing and pulling paint across their paper. We will continue investigating this unit throughout the next few weeks with hands on activities!

Our classroom Elf, Rudy, also arrived to make sure the EDK students are following the Jefferson 3Bs - being kind, being safe, and being ready!

Have a wonderful weekend!
